David started officiating football in Arizona in 1999. After his first year of working High School ball, he picked up every rec league that he could find, and by March, his wife asked, “When does football end?” His answer was, "I guess it never does."

David worked for the AIA High School as a Back Judge for 8 seasons and Referee for 5. He was assigned to multiple playoff games and finished his high school crew with a state final as a Referee. In 2008, he joined the WSFL, working as a Field Judge and Back Judge. In 2012, he was picked up by the Big Sky as a Back Judge. Then, the big call came in 2014 to work in the PAC-12 as a Back Judge.

In 2024, David switched to work in the SEC.
